Successful COGGO 2022 research projects announced

COGGO is pleased to announce funding for new projects to commence in 2022.

Established in 2000, the purpose of the Council of Grain Grower Organisations Ltd (COGGO) Research Fund is to invest in innovative new research and development projects from across the whole supply chain, and that can demonstrate a direct benefit to Western Australian grain growers.

Expressions of Interest for funding were received from 23 applicants from a cross section of industry, government, grower groups and research organisations. This highlights the demand for funding of small catalytic R&D projects of relevance to grain growers in WA.

The 2022 COGGO Research Fund will support the following successful recipient organisations for four projects commencing in January 2022:

  • Murdoch University ($149,862 over two years) “Preventing bacterial induced ice nucleation to increase productivity of grains”.
  • CSIRO ($149,405 over two years) “Identifying opportunities to integrate a spring-sown summer crop into winter wheat-based cropping system in WA”
  • Murdoch University ($99,805 over two years) “Identify and combine the best alleles from two genes to achieve maximum pod shattering resistance in narrow-leafed lupins”
  • Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development ($73,271 over two years) “Using high throughput sequencing technology to transform disease surveillance”

“COGGO is pleased to be able to support these exciting research projects for the profitability and sustainability of the Western Australia grains industry”, said Mr Rhys Turton, COGGO Chairman.

We have a long history of providing catalytic funding for new R&D ideas and have seen many past recipients make a significant impact on returns for Western Australian grain growers. Our members voluntarily contribute 0.5% of their own net farm-gate returns for which we are very grateful, this in turn then enables COGGO to fund new projects in the areas of plant breeding and associated research and development.
